The idea
A critical period is an age range during which certain experiences are required for an ability to develop at all.
In practice
An ability that fails to develop normally when the needed experience is missing at the time.
Where people slip
The strongest evidence comes from rare cases of extreme deprivation, since the experience cannot ethically be withheld.
