The Menstrual Cycle
Captions available
The idea
The menstrual cycle averages about twenty-eight days across four phases: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase.
In practice
Ovulation, the release of an egg, typically around days fourteen to sixteen.
Where people slip
Cycles vary widely between people. If no fertilisation occurs, the thickened uterine lining is shed and the cycle begins again.
