Sellers's Dimensions of Ethnoracial Identity

Captions available

The idea

Ethnoracial identity is an umbrella term for racial and ethnic identity, and Robert Sellers described three of its dimensions. Salience is how relevant the identity is in a particular situation. Centrality is how important it is to one's sense of self overall. Regard is whether one feels positively or negatively about one's group. The dimensions can vary independently.

In practice

A student for whom being Black is central, but most salient when she is the only Black student in a seminar, and whose regard for her group is strongly positive.

Where people slip

Ethnoracial identity is more salient for people of colour, who are more often in moratorium or achievement on it than White young adults, and young adults change status more than older adults. Exam items describe a moment or a feeling and ask for the dimension: a situation points to salience, overall importance to centrality, feeling toward the group to regard.
