Measuring Puberty

Captions available

The idea

Pubertal timing is usually self-reported: girls report the date of menarche, and boys report secondary sex characteristics.

In practice

Most girls prepared for menarche, usually by mothers, while most boys report that no one talked with them about spermarche.

Where people slip

Peer-relative timing, looking older, younger or the same as peers, matters for how puberty is experienced.
