Eating Disorder Types

The idea

The diagnostic manual lists several eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa involves restricting food intake. Bulimia nervosa involves binge eating followed by compensatory behaviour such as vomiting, laxatives or excessive exercise. Binge-eating disorder involves recurrent, uncontrolled overeating without such compensation. Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder involves avoiding or restricting food. Other cases are diagnosed as unspecified eating disorder.

In practice

Two teens with the same eating disorder, one underweight and one at an average weight, both seriously ill.

Where people slip

The misconception is that you can tell an eating disorder by weight. Not all people with eating disorders are underweight, and the consequences reach the blood, muscles, skin, digestion, heart and brain. Exam items describe a pattern of eating and ask for the disorder: restriction points to anorexia, bingeing with purging to bulimia, bingeing without purging to binge-eating disorder.
