Human Growth and Development / Unit 8 HGD 1099 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Internalizing and Externalizing
Captions available
The idea
Internalizing behaviours are directed inward, such as withdrawal, anxiety, depression and stomachaches; externalizing behaviours are directed outward, such as aggression, rule-breaking and delinquency.
In practice
One child complaining of headaches every school morning, another disrupting the class daily.
Where people slip
Many children show both, and many outgrow them; for others they signal risk.
