Sociometric Status
The idea
Sociometric status comes from classmates' nominations of peers they like and dislike, a method that sorts children into five categories, from Coie, Dodge and Coppotelli. Popular children receive many likes and few dislikes; they tend to be prosocial and cooperative. Rejected children receive few likes and many dislikes. Controversial children receive many of both; they are often leaders, trendsetters or class clowns. Average children receive moderate counts and are the largest group. Neglected children receive few of either.
In practice
A class survey in which one quiet new girl is named by almost no one, liked or disliked: neglected, not rejected.
Where people slip
Rejected children may be aggressive or uncooperative, or targeted for a disability, delay, or minority status, and they risk depression and loneliness; one reciprocal friendship buffers that risk. Exam items give a pattern of likes and dislikes and ask for the category.
