The idea

From the eighteen eighties, boarding schools such as the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania forced Native children to abandon their tribal traditions.

Children taught vocational trades and domestic science in place of their own languages and customs.

Where people slip

The federal government founded Carlisle in eighteen seventy-nine. The aim, the anchor says, was to make children embrace Euro-American social and cultural practices.
