The idea

On August fourth, nineteen forty-two, the United States and Mexico began the bracero programme, bringing Mexican workers to American farms to meet wartime labour needs.

In practice

Five million contracts across twenty-four states, the Yawp counts, with work on railroads as well as farms.

Where people slip

Unit ten showed Mexicans pushed out to cut relief rolls; a decade later they were recruited.
