Captions available

The idea

On February nineteenth, nineteen forty-two, Roosevelt signed Executive Order ninety sixty-six, authorising military commanders to exclude civilians from military areas.

In practice

Exclusion zones that ultimately covered the whole West Coast, the Yawp records.

Where people slip

The order named no ethnic group, the National Archives notes, yet it fell on Japanese Americans, immigrants and citizens alike.
