The Bonus Army Marches

Captions available

The idea

In the spring of nineteen thirty-two about fifteen thousand veterans of the First World War marched on Washington to demand early payment of bonuses due in nineteen forty-five.

In practice

Veterans camped in vacant federal buildings and on the Anacostia Flats near the Capitol.

Where people slip

They remained for weeks, waiting for Congress to act. The Senate refused their demand in July.
