Why Britain Turned South

Captions available

The idea

By seventeen seventy-eight the war was deadlocked. Lord North favoured peace and George the Third demanded submission, and Britain turned south expecting greater Loyalist support.

In practice

Lord George Germain believing victory required Loyalists, enslaved people and Native allies.

Where people slip

The strategy assumed three populations would rise for the Crown. Only the calculation about enslaved people proved partly right.
