Cornwallis forced General Horatio Gates to retreat into North Carolina at Camden in August seventeen eighty, in what the anchor calls one of the worst disasters of the entire war.

Congress replacing Gates with Nathanael Greene that December.

Greene held that to defeat Cornwallis he did not have to win a single battle, so long as he remained in the field.
