How Georgia Changed

Captions available

The idea

Oglethorpe presented Georgia as a place for England's worthy poor to start anew, on an agrarian model sustaining egalitarian values holding all men as equal.

In practice

A founding vision that called for alcohol and slavery to be banned.

Where people slip

Colonists relocating from other colonies, especially South Carolina, disregarded the prohibitions, and by the seventeen fifties Georgia produced rice grown and harvested by the enslaved.
