History of the United States I / Unit 3 USH1 0336 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Arms Race
The idea
Native peoples refashioned European brassware into arrow points and turned axes used for chopping wood into weapons, and muskets were the most prized piece of European weaponry to obtain. The anchor draws the consequence directly: formerly weaker groups, if they had access to European metal and weapons, suddenly gained the upper hand against once-dominant groups. The Algonquian traded with the French for muskets and gained an advantage over the Iroquois.
In practice
Two European empires arming opposite sides of a war that predated them both.
Where people slip
This is why the colonial wars cannot be read as Europeans against Native peoples. Native nations pursued their own strategies and used Europeans to pursue them, and the balance of power among them shifted according to who could reach a trading post. Treating them as a single bloc erases the politics that decided the outcomes.
