History of the United States I / Unit 3   USH1 0338 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Beaver, Pigs, and the Environment

Captions available

The idea

Beaver were hunted to extinction in New England, New York and other areas, driven by European demand for beaver-trimmed hats and Native demand for firearms.

In practice

The loss of beaver ponds, which had been habitats for fish and water sources for deer and moose.

Where people slip

Pigs allowed to forage freely consumed the foods deer depended on, making traditional game scarce.
