The idea

The Wampanoag leader Metacom, called King Philip, resolved to stop Puritan expansion into the Connecticut River Valley. Wampanoag, Nipmuck, Pocumtuck and Narragansett took up arms.

In practice

Native forces destroying half of the frontier Puritan towns before English forces prevailed.

Where people slip

The war permanently altered English perception. Afterwards Puritan writers vilified Native peoples as bloodthirsty savages, and a new racial hatred became characteristic.
