The idea

Roger Williams questioned Puritan appropriation of Native lands, argued for complete separation from the Church of England, and held that the state must not punish people for belief. Convicted of spreading dangerous ideas, he founded Rhode Island as a sanctuary and wrote favourably of Native peoples, contrasting their virtues with Puritan intolerance. Anne Hutchinson argued that ministers taught a shallow Protestantism of hierarchy and works rather than grace.

In practice

Her excommunication in sixteen thirty-eight, her move to New Netherland, and her death with her family in sixteen forty-three.

Where people slip

Her chief offence was claiming direct religious revelation, which negated the minister's role. Winthrop noted her death as God's righteous judgment against heresy, which tells you how the colony understood dissent.
