The Jesuits and the Relations
Captions available
The idea
Jesuits arrived in Quebec in the sixteen twenties and never exceeded forty priests. Their Jesuit Relations were detailed annual reports on their progress in bringing the faith.
In practice
Brébeuf recording lacrosse ordered as a cure for fever, whole villages contending and betting beaver robes.
Where people slip
The Relations document Native responses as well as Jesuit perspectives, which is what makes them usable.
