History of the United States I / Unit 3   USH1 0317 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Tobacco Saves the Colony

Captions available

The idea

Virginia stabilised on tobacco, exported from sixteen fourteen, which the anchor says saved the colony from ruin.

In practice

Clearing, planting, curing in barns and packing in hogsheads, every stage labour-intensive.

Where people slip

The crop did not reward capital so much as labour, and the colony had almost none of it.
