Captions available

The idea

A patroonship granted large tracts of land and the right to govern the tenants there, to investors who shared costs and promised passage for at least thirty Dutch farmers.

In practice

Kiliaen van Rensselaer holding one of the largest, covering most of present-day Albany and Rensselaer Counties.

Where people slip

The system created a yawning gap in wealth and status between rent-paying tenants and wealthy patroons.
