History of the United States I / Unit 14   USH1 1972 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Personal Liberty Laws

Captions available

The idea

Eight northern state legislatures passed personal liberty laws giving arrested freedom-seekers state legal protections, including the jury trial the federal Act denied them.

In practice

State law placed deliberately across the path of a federal statute.

Where people slip

Southerners read them as further evidence that the North disrespected the Act and slaveholders' property rights, which is exactly what they were.
