Generative AI at Work / Unit 1 GAI 016 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Is This a Good Task for AI?
The idea
Before using generative AI on a piece of work, four questions decide whether it fits the task and how much checking the result will need.
In practice
Step one: name the output. Drafts, summaries, template filling and text transformation are the strong cases; a final decision is never the tool's to make. Step two: check the shape of the request. Short, bounded requests are safer than open-ended requests for long answers. Step three: check the domain. Where the answer depends on deep context or specialist expertise, plan for an expert to review it before anyone relies on it. Step four: check what you would have to paste. If it holds personal or confidential information, stop and follow your organization's AI policy first; unit seven covers this.
Where people slip
A task can pass all four questions and still produce errors. The questions set how much checking to plan for, not whether checking is needed.
