Selection Bias

Captions available

The idea

Selection bias arises when those who take part in a study differ from those who do not, in ways that influence the outcome.

In practice

Volunteers for an exercise study who began with a more positive attitude to exercise.

Where people slip

Everyone in a study consented to be in it. That fact makes selection bias a feature of every study, not an occasional defect.
