Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 6   EBP 0758 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Only Randomisation Establishes Cause

Captions available

The idea

A randomized controlled trial is the only design that offers the opportunity to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between an intervention and an outcome.

In practice

Participants allocated by chance, so that the groups differ in the intervention and not systematically in anything else.

Where people slip

This is the strongest claim in the unit and it is about opportunity. A poorly conducted trial establishes nothing.
