Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 5 EBP 0649 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Integrating the Three Components
The idea
The technique: bring the appraised evidence, name what you as clinician bring to this decision, establish what this patient values, then integrate the three with focused and big-picture thinking — deciding by discernment, because no formula assigns the weights.
In practice
A supported intervention. A clinician who notes that their own experience inclines them toward it, and says so rather than leaving it unexamined. A patient for whom the intervention conflicts with something they have said matters to them. The plan built around the conflict rather than over it, with the alternative chosen for reasons that can be stated. The reasoning recorded, so the decision can be examined later by the clinician who made it and by anyone who follows them.
Where people slip
The recording is the part that gets dropped first. An integration nobody can reconstruct cannot be learned from, and this unit's whole argument is that these decisions are learned from.
