Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 19 EBP 2723 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Teaching EBP Where People Work
The idea
The technique: secure protected time and funding before offering the teaching; build it on a model rather than session by session; deliver it where the work happens; and judge it by changed practice rather than by attendance, since attendance is a process measure.
In practice
A hospital teaching evidence-based practice to working clinicians. Protected time funded first, so the invitation reaches people who can accept it. Structure put in place — an educator, evidence access, and an academic partnership supplying expertise while practice questions travel back the other way. The teaching built on a named model and delivered at the bedside rather than in a classroom. Clinicians taught to disseminate what they complete, through presentations, and supported in writing successful changes into policy so they outlast the people who made them. Success judged on whether practice and patient results changed, with sessions delivered and staff attending recorded as process measures rather than reported as outcomes.
Where people slip
Fund the protected time first. Teaching offered to clinicians who cannot leave their caseload has been offered to nobody, and the attendance figures will record that as a failure of interest rather than of scheduling.
