Misconception: Guidelines Are Rules
Captions available
The idea
A guideline recommends for a set of circumstances and identifies its own exceptions. Applying it to a person still requires clinical judgement and that person's values.
In practice
A guideline followed for most patients and departed from, with reasons, for one.
Where people slip
This is the misconception seeded in Unit 01 and answered here. A guideline that could be applied without judgement would not need clinicians.
