The Scop and Oral Poetry
Captions available
The idea
Most Anglo-Saxon poetry was composed and passed on aloud, by a singer-poet called a scop, and written down later. Beowulf shows a bard singing at the feast, and his songs foreshadow the story's own events. The anchor stresses how little survives: only four manuscript books of the poetry.
In practice
Sung first, written later, mostly lost.
Where people slip
Four manuscripts carry the whole tradition.
