The idea
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, published in nineteen thirty-two, imagines a World State whose citizens are engineered and conditioned into a fixed hierarchy and kept content. Huxley called it a "negative utopia." His last novel, Island, offered a utopia.
In practice
