English Literature / Unit 16 ENL 1542 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Reading a Modernist Poem
The idea
A Modernist poem often refuses to explain itself, so read it in steps. First, identify the voices: The Waste Land and "Prufrock" shift among speakers, so ask who is speaking each passage. Second, mark the images, which often carry the meaning without comment, as Imagism required; the evening "Like a patient etherised upon a table" tells you Prufrock's paralysis. Third, find the allusions and ask what each brings: a line from Dante or Shakespeare sets the present against a richer past. Fourth, notice the juxtapositions: fragments placed side by side without connecting words make an argument by contrast. Fifth, look for a pattern beneath the fragments, the mythic method, such as the grail quest. Then state what the poem says about modern life and how its form enacts that disorder.
In practice
Voices, images, allusions, juxtaposition, myth.
Where people slip
Fragmentation is the method, not a flaw. Questions ask what the fragments together imply.
