A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, of nineteen sixteen, is a Künstlerroman, a novel of an artist's growth, tracing the religious and intellectual awakening of Stephen Dedalus, Joyce's alter ego, whose surname alludes to the mythical craftsman Daedalus. Pound had it serialized.
