English Literature / Unit 13 ENL 1245 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Identifying Romantic Poets From Their Lines
The idea
The exam often quotes a few lines and asks for the poet. Use form and theme together. Short songs with contraries and a child's voice suggest Blake. Blank-verse memory of nature, or a sonnet on the times, suggests Wordsworth. The supernatural, a ballad stanza, or a conversation by the fire suggests Coleridge. Ottava rima with a comic couplet, or a brooding exile, suggests Byron. Terza rima, a wind or a skylark, and prophecy suggest Shelley. Rich sensuous detail, an ode addressing an object, and a meditation on beauty and death suggest Keats. Scots dialect suggests Burns. Then check the date and the form: an ode on an urn is Keats, an ode on the wind Shelley, an ode on childhood Wordsworth.
In practice
Form plus theme points to the poet.
Where people slip
All three generations wrote odes and sonnets. The ode's object, urn, wind or childhood, is often the deciding clue.
