The idea
Emma, of eighteen fifteen, presents "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich," a heroine who overestimates her matchmaking and misreads those around her. Persuasion, published after Austen's death, follows Anne Elliot, persuaded eight years earlier to break her engagement to Captain Wentworth, who meets him again.
In practice
A meddling heroine; a second chance.
Where people slip
Emma's errors drive the plot.
