The Intimations Ode
Captions available
The idea
The "Ode: Intimations of Immortality," completed in eighteen-oh-four, mourns a lost childhood glory: "Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting," and we come "trailing clouds of glory." The child, nearest heaven, loses the vision, but the man finds consolation in memory and "the philosophic mind."
In practice
Childhood glory lost, then consoled.
Where people slip
The child is the poem's prophet.
