The Prelude and the Revolution

Captions available

The idea

The Prelude recounts Wordsworth's experience of revolutionary France, and the anchor quotes its most famous line on that hope: "Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive." The anchor records that the Reign of Terror then chastened Wordsworth, as it did his fellow early Romantics.

In practice

Revolutionary hope, then disillusion.

Where people slip

The line records hope later lost.
