The idea
In Novak's warm-up method, known as JiTT, students answer online questions before class, and the teacher adjusts the lesson to their answers; in peer instruction, when about 30 to 65 percent answer a concept question wrongly, students discuss and revote.
In practice
Warm-ups reveal that half the class confuses mass and weight, so the lesson starts there.
Where people slip
Both rest on prompt formative feedback.
