Gender Constancy and Stereotypes
Captions available
The idea
Between ages three and six, children develop gender constancy, understanding that gender does not change with external features; during this period their gender stereotypes are strong and rigid, loosening at about eight or nine.
In practice
A four-year-old insists that only girls can be nurses.
Where people slip
Adults' heavy focus on gender teaches children to treat it as a key source of information.
