Captions available
The idea
Gender identity is a person's psychological sense of their gender, distinct from sexual orientation, the direction of attraction. Most people are cisgender, identifying with the gender matching their biological sex.
In practice
An estimated 0.6 percent of U.S. adults identify as transgender; others identify as nonbinary, outside the binary.
Where people slip
Sex, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation do not always correspond.
