Self-Determination Theory

The idea
Self-determination theory, from Deci and Ryan, holds that people have three psychological needs: competence, relatedness and autonomy. When they are met, actions feel self-determined; when not, people feel coerced.
In practice
A student who helped set the class rules follows them willingly.
Where people slip
Self-determination is a perception of freedom, possible within rules, and the needs are never fully satisfied.
