Expectancy-Value Theory
Captions available
The idea
Expectancy-value theory holds that motivation equals expectancy of success multiplied by the value of the task, so a zero on either side means no motivation.
In practice
A student sure she can pass a course she sees as pointless has little motivation.
Where people slip
This is Wigfield and Eccles's model, not Vroom's workplace expectancy theory with its instrumentality and valence.
