The idea
At the postconventional level, right is defined by principles: stage five treats laws as social contracts that can be changed, and stage six follows universal ethical principles.
In practice
An unjust rule should be changed through fair procedures, not obeyed without question.
Where people slip
Few people reach stage six, and Kohlberg's levels describe reasoning, not how well people actually behave.
