Turiel's Domains

The idea
Turiel's social domain theory holds that even young children distinguish moral rules about harm and fairness from conventional rules and from personal choices.
In practice
Hitting a classmate is wrong everywhere; calling a teacher by first name depends on the school.
Where people slip
A personal domain, such as choosing one's friends, lies outside both kinds of rule.
