Sociometric Status

Captions available

The idea

Sociometric status classifies children by how often classmates name them as liked and as disliked, the scheme set out by Coie, Dodge and Coppotelli. Popular children are liked by many and disliked by few. Rejected children are disliked by many and liked by few, whether aggressive or withdrawn. Controversial children are liked by many and disliked by many. Neglected children are rarely named either way. Average children fall in between. Social skills training and joining activities can help rejected children.

In practice

Worked example: a quiet student is seldom named by anyone, as a friend or as someone avoided. Low on both counts: neglected, not rejected.

Where people slip

Neglected and rejected are often confused. A rejected child is actively disliked by many classmates; a neglected child is overlooked by most of them. The difference matters, because rejection is the status linked to later problems.
