The idea
Play is self-chosen, process-focused, imaginative and active, and it takes four main forms: functional, constructive, symbolic or pretend, and games with rules.
In practice
Rolling a ball over and over, building a tower, playing house, then a game of tag.
Where people slip
Constructive play, making something, is the preschool favorite; games with rules come later.
