Educational Psychology / Unit 3   EDP 0254 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Homophily and Peer Influence

Captions available

The idea

Adolescents choose friends who resemble them, homophily, and then influence one another, so friends grow more alike through both selection and mutual influence.

In practice

Friends who share an interest in music push each other to practice more.

Where people slip

Influence can run either way: deviant peer contagion spreads problem behavior, while positive peer support spreads good habits.
