Syntax and Pragmatics
Captions available
The idea
Syntax is the set of rules for ordering words into sentences, and pragmatics is the social use of language: taking turns, staying on topic and matching tone.
In practice
"Dog bites man" and "man bites dog" share words but differ in meaning.
Where people slip
Pragmatics also depends on context, so the same sentence can be a joke in one setting and an insult in another.
