Educational Psychology / Unit 3 EDP 0242 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Under- and Overextension
Captions available
The idea
Underextension uses a word too narrowly, and overextension uses it too broadly, both normal errors as children map words onto categories.
In practice
"Dog" for only the family dog is underextension; "dog" for every animal is overextension.
Where people slip
Both errors are reasonable guesses about where a word's boundaries lie, and they fade with experience.
