Private Speech
Captions available
The idea
Private speech is children talking aloud to themselves; Piaget read it as egocentric speech, but Vygotsky saw thinking aloud that becomes silent inner speech.
In practice
A child building with blocks murmurs, "Big one first, then the small one."
Where people slip
For Vygotsky, private speech is a tool for solving problems, not a sign of immaturity.
