Conservation

The idea
Conservation is understanding that an amount stays the same when its shape changes; preoperational children fail it because of centration and irreversibility.
In practice
Poured into a tall thin glass, the same juice seems like more to a four-year-old.
Where people slip
Centration fixes on one feature, such as height; irreversibility cannot mentally pour the juice back.
